PREFACE.

The Commissariot of Lauder was co-extensive with the County of

Berwick.

The Register of Testaments is contained in ten volumes, viz. —

i. 1 561 to 23rd July 1566.

1 A. (II) 24th June 1627 to September 1634.

2. 1 6th September 1634 to 12th January 1641 and
2nd July 1650 to 5th April 1653.

3. 5th April 1653 to 29th May 1665.

4. 14th May 1667 to 14th April 1679.

5. 2nd April 1679 to 19th December 17 10.

6. 1 6th January 171 1 to 20th April 1731.

7. 3rd May 1731 to 10th May 1743.

8. 21st June 1743 to 16th December 1760.

9. 20th January 1761 to 17th December 1782.

Volume Ia. has been deliberately destroyed some time previous to its
transmission to the Lord Register's Department, the pages having been cut
out about an inch from the binding, so that only a small part of the Testa-
ments now remains, in many cases only the rubric. The names of many
of these Testaments are now lost, and of others only fragments remain.
These, as far as it has been found possible to recover them, have been
included in an Appendix at the end of the General Index.

In addition to the above volumes there are three bundles of unrecorded
Testaments covering the period from 1680 to 1822, and a portfolio of
Scroll Testaments for the years 1652 to 1653. These relating to the period
before 1800 have been included in this Index, and are indicated by T.
and S. T.

The other Records preserved in the Register House comprise —

Record of Inventories, 1807 to 1823 with Index.

Record of Decreets, 1661 to 1755.

Minute-Books, 1652 to 1702.

Diet Books, 1658 to 1821.

Testaments (recorded), 1650 to 1685, an d 1649 to 1782 (included in this

index).
Edicts, 1664 to 1683, and 1686 to 1823.
Processes, 1617 to 1686, and 1651 to 1823.
Deeds, 1637 to 1684.
Bonds of Caution, 1692 to 1822.
Inventories of Estates, 1789 to 1823.
